Some of the world's best preserved fossils are found in the flat-topped ridges of southwestern Wyoming's cold sagebrush desert.
Fossilized fish, insects, plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals are exceptional for their abundance, variety, and detail of preservation.
Most remarkable is the story they tell of ancient life in a sub-tropical landscape.
You can either explore the park on your own or with a ranger guided tour. Summer is the best time to visit.
Children's activities include make a fossil rubbing, clean a fossil, visit a fossil quarry, hike with a ranger, and become a Junior Ranger.
The Green River Formation includes the best paleontological record of Tertiary aquatic communities in North America and possibly the world.
John Rockefeller Memorial Highway - US-89 WY

This is a very scenic roadway connecting two famous national parks, the merger of highways US-89/ US-191/ US-287.
Named in honor of the conservationist and philanthropist who was instrumental in the creation and enlargement of numerous National Parks.
This highway starts from the north exit of Grand Teton National Park traveling northwards to West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, a distance of 27 miles.
The 24,000 acre park is managed by Grand Teton National Park.
Teton Mountain Climb Adventures
Climbing these mountains are recommended only for the most experienced climbers. The taller ones form the famous
Cathedral Group.
Grand Teton - 13,766 ft - Grand Teton can be climbed with minimal gear via the Owen-Spalding route
Mount Owen - 12,928 ft -
Middle Teton - 12,804 ft - The peak is immediately southwest of Grand Teton and the two are separated by the lower saddle, a broad high ridge at 11,600 feet
Mt. Moran - 12,605 ft
Teewinot Mountain - 12,325 ft - An unmarked climbers' trail, known as the Apex Trail, leads most of the way up the mountain from the Lupine Meadows area.
Buck Mountain - 11,938 ft - The mountain is the highest summit south of Garnet Canyon and is easily seen from most vantage points in Jackson Hole.
Rolling Thunder Mountain - 10,908 ft - is in the northern Teton Range,
Rendezvous Mountain - 10,450 ft - is a large mountain massif located in the southern Teton Range.
Signal Mountain - 7,720 ft - is an isolated summit standing inside Grand Teton Park. Not part of the Teton Range, but it does provide great vistas of the Teton Range and Jackson Hole.
Yellowstone - Old Faithful Geyser
You could easily spend a whole day here covering a wide arrange of
natural geothermal features including giant geysers and bubbling mudpots.
Many can be seen by following Geyser Hill Nature Trail.
Old Faithful Visitor Center
- Exhibits explain hot springs, geysers and other geothermal activity.
Old Faithful
- Most famous geyser in the world (although it is neither the largest, highest or most regular in Yellowstone).
Erupting about 22 times per day, its column reaches an height of 130 feet for about 35 seconds discharging over
6,000 gallons of water. Little changed over 100 years of activity.
Black Sand Basin
- Some of the most brilliantly colored pools found anywhere with vivid colors of orange and yellow.
Grotto Geyser
- Its cone is more intriquing than the actual geyser (which will only splash about 12 feet high).
The cone is a widely shape deposit of minerals accumulated over the centuries.
Riverside Geyser
= One of the few geysers in the park that erupts at a slight slant. It is more regular
than nearby Old Faithful occuring every 6.5 hours for a 20 second display of a 75 foot column of
arching water.
Morning Glory Pool
- Located near Old Faithful and considered one of the most colorful in the park.
It is slowly losing its deep-blue color for a more aqua-green due to refuse tossed
into its cone thereby slowing its source of hot water.
Lone Star Geyser
- Erupting near Old Faithful every 3 hours with a 25 minute, 20 foot geyser.
Giantess Geyser
- This one is characterized by irregular, violent bursts that may rise upto 200 feet.
Active only a few times a year with active phase lasting 12-36 hours.
Plume Geyser
- Very regular geyser near Old Faithful
erupting every 25 minutes upto 30 feet. Allows for closeup viewing.
Beehive Geyser
- A very narrow cone acts as a high-pressure nozzle shooting water 200 feet high for
a 5 minute eruption. Irregular and infrequent.
Mammoth Hot Springs
Contains special features on Indians, early park history and wildlife.
The park was first discovered by John Coltier in 1806 after he split off from the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Miverva Terrace
- Very active hot springs near Mammoth Hot Springs produces 500 gallons of water each
minute and deposits two tons of limestone daily.
Norris Geyser Basin
Highly considered as the most exciting thermal area in Yellowstone with hundreds of
geysers, pools, hot springs and other geothermal features.
These geological features that are easily accessible by park trails.
Steamboat Geyser
- The most powerful and unpredictable in Yellowstone. At times dormant for upto 9 years
and than erupting with incredible fury upto 350 feet high that easily dwarfs the 120 foot high plume of Old Faithful.
Falls of the Gibbon
- 84 foot scenic waterfalls
National Park Ranger Museum
Opened in 1991 inside the old soldier station from the early 1900's
when the military patrolled the park.
Midway Geyser Basin
Located near Madison Junction and home to a number of great geysers and other unique
geological features that are easily accessible by park trails.
Excelsior Geyser
- very powerful geyser that last erupted in 1888 with a 300 foot column.
It still produces a lot of steam.

- hot springs, geysers and colorful paint pots.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
1540 foot deep canyon of the Yellowstone River with several waterfalls and scenic vistas. Follow the Grand Loop Road north from Fishing Bridge
for a 24-mile course. Here you can see where the park got its name for the bright yellow color of the canyon walls. They range in shading from
pale lemon to brilliant orange. Several waterfalls are near the upper end of the canyon by Tower-Roosevelt.

- Eroded lava-ash sediment and petrified trees.

Mount Washburn
- a 7.2 mile alpine trail (an all-day strenuous hike) can take you to the top of this 10,243-foot snow-capped summit.
There is a lookout tower that will give you incredible views of the entire park.
A guided group leaves three mornings a week from Canyon Village.
Yellowstone - Fishing Bridge Landmarks
This area is prime habitat for a lot of the larger mammals of the
region, including grizzly bears, moose and elk. Also a great vista for
waterfowl including white pelican, gulls, mallards and geese.

- Great overview and exhibits on the birdlife, fish and geology of the Yellowstone Lake area.
Yellowstone Lake
- Largest high altitude mountain lake in the Rocky Mountains with over 100 mile shoreline.

- This amazing geyser is located in the Lake Junction Area.
Grant Village Visitors Center
This particular center feature fire ecology with video shows,
3D displays and special exhibits about the great fires of 1988 when
nearly 40% of the park suffered extensive damage. However those
fires sowed the seeds for a dramatic rebirth of the local ecology.
Yellowstone - West Thumb Geyser Basin
Located on the edge of Yellowstone Lake is an area packed with geysers, mudpots,
and colorful hot springs. These geological features that are easily accessible by park trails.
Fishing Cone
- a hot spring inside a cone on the edge of the lake.
Isa Lake
- drains to both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Jackson Lake Lodge Resort
