| MainTour Hampton Roads Vacation Adventure |
Hampton dates back to 1610, making it the oldest continuously English speaking settlement in the USA. In 1718, local forces sailed out and successfully defeated the infamous pirate Blackbeard.
During both the Revolutionary and American Civil Wars, Hampton was the setting for several major battles. It was burned by the British in 1813 and by the Confederates in 1861.
In 1864, the waterfront saw perhaps the most famous naval battle of all when the first two ironclad warships, USS Monitor and CSS Virginia fought just offshore.
In 1958, NASA's Langley Research Center was founded here and provided training for America's first astronauts. Today, many museums preserve this rich heritage.
