Lynchburg dates back to 1757 when John Lynch established a ferry crossing over the James River that quickly became a 45 acre settlement. In 1785 he built the town's first tobacco warehouse.

During the civil war, the city served as a major Confederate Army supply base and hospital. It was the site of a major battle, June 18, 1864, when Union forces led by Gen. David Hunter unsuccessfully attempted to evict Confederate troops led by Gen. Jubal Early from the city.

Lynchburg has several distinctive residential districts.
