One of the few original Presidential birthplaces open to the public, Woodrow Wilson's first home offers an authentic picture of family life in the pre-Civil War Shenandoah Valley. The house is nestled within the Gospel Hill District, one of Staunton's five National Historic Districts.

The Museum offers a look into Wilson's public life, from his Princeton study to his historic World War I peace efforts. Also, a computer archives presents 1850s newspapers, historic photographs, Civil War rosters, and more.

Exhibits also include his favority White House limousine.

Library

Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Library houses a unique cross section of scholarship of Wilson during and immediately after his life, including many works by those who knew him best such as Edith Bolling Wilson, John Randolph Bolling, Stockton Axson, and his daughter Eleanor to name but a few. In addition to the type of personal memoir written by those who were personally closest to him, the Library contains many memoirs of those who worked with Wilson in an official capacity. The Library also contains an array of official and non-official governmental volumes concerning World War I.

Archive

The Archive houses a sizable collection of scrapbooks which were predominantly generated during Wilson’s lifetime and contains a wealth of contemporary press clippings relating to his career. scrapbooks also contains a wealth of information about Wilson’s visit to Staunton in December, 1912. Additionally, there are personal letters from Woodrow Wilson spanning the years 1890 to 1924.

As President Wilson maneuvered through Congress three major pieces of legislation.

• The first was a lower tariff, the Underwood Act; attached to the measure was a graduated Federal income tax.
• The passage of the Federal Reserve Act provided the Nation with the more elastic money supply it badly needed.
• In 1914 antitrust legislation established a Federal Trade Commission to prohibit unfair business practices.

• 1856 - Born in Virginia, the son of a Presbyterian minister. His young childhood saw the civil war come through the Shenandoah.
• Attended Princeton University, University of Virginia Law School, and then earned a doctarate for John Hopkins University.
• 1885 - married to Ellen Louise Axson
• 1902 - President of Princeton University
• 1910 - Becomes governor of New Jersey
• 1913-1921 - 28th President of US (Democrat) - He had campaigned on a program called the New Freedom, which stressed individualism and states' rights. In the three-way election he received only 42 percent of the popular vote but an overwhelming electoral vote.
• 1916 - Wins reelection to a second term based on pasing new legislation prohibiting child labor and establishing the eight-hour workday. Campaign is led by the slogan "he kept us out of war,"
• 1917 - After the election Wilson concluded that America could not remain neutral in the World War and asks Congress for a declaration of war on Germany.
• Jan 1918 - Enunciates American war aims--the Fourteen Points, the last of which would establish "A general association of nations...affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike."
• Nov 1918 - German armistace ends the World War.
• 1919 - The Treaty of Versailles - later presented to the Senate the Versailles Treaty also contains the Covenant of the League of Nations.

  The President, against the warnings of his doctors, had made a national tour to mobilize public sentiment for the treaty. Exhausted, he suffered a stroke and nearly died. Tenderly nursed by his second wife, Edith Bolling Galt, he lived until 1924.
