Dolly Madison sold the property in 1844 which eventually passed through five different owners before being purchased in 1901 by the famous DuPont family who made extensive additions to it. Over the next 82 years they added two horse racing tracks to the property- one flat track, and one steeplechase - numerous barns, homes, and outbuildings were constructed on the property, including a train station and company store. Finally in 1983, the property was donated to a historical trust.
In 1911, the DuPonts built a general store on the property which today serves as the Visitor Center and Museum Gift Shop.

Elected to the Second Continental Congress and served as a member of the United States House of Representatives
1787 - James Madison traveled to Philadelphia to attend the Constitutional Convention. Madison's dedication and hard work during the convention that drafted the U.S. Constitution earned him the title of "Father of the Constitution" at the age of 36.
James Madison was among the first to recognize that a stronger central government was necessary to replace the weak form
of central government established by the Articles of Confederation (1781-1788). After an exhaustive review
of ancient confederacies and democracies he was able to submit the "Virginia Plan" which found the
balance between state interests and national authority. Afterwards he was one of the principle writers
of the "Federalists Papers" which helped to overcome stiff resistance by the states in seceeding power
to the new federal government.
