20,444-acre preserve the honors the Wilderness Road, a historic route founded by Daniel Boone in 1769 and used as the principle route to settle Kentucky and other points west. The rugged and heavily wooded route is being restored, today's modern route US-25E, with its tunnels, bypasses much of it.

From 1775-1796, over 300,000 people migrated to Kentucky through here, although the trail was only horse path, not big enough to handle wagons.

Still a mostly wild area today, there are over 50 miles of hiking trails. Most noteworthy sites are accessible only by foot. There are 160 developed campsites in the park.
