Temple Square is the center point of Salt Lake City.
It occuppies 10 acres at the center of the city, in fact, you can still find the original surveyor's
marker in the southeast corner designating the exact city center.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) own and operate Temple Square.
Temple Square Visitor Centers
Two centers are located on Temple Square, one
each on the north and south sides. The North Visitors Center is now
showing the movie Legacy, a 53-minute feature that covers the story
of the Mormon pioneers that overcame great tribulation to reach and
settle the Salt Lake Valley.
Temple Square Gardens
The grounds are regarded as one of the best kept gardens in the city.
During Christmas time, nearly 300,000 lights are added to celebrate the holiday season.
View the Mormon Handcart statue, the Seagull Monument, and other statuary and fountains throughout the lush flower-filled grounds.
A large 10 foot high granite wall surrounds the square.
Christmas on Temple Square
Featuring hundreds of thousands of lights sparkling on trees and shrubs around the Square,
a life-size Nativity scene, and musical groups performing nightly throughout December.

This towering edifice is the famous landmark centerpiece of Temple Square.
Construction of the Mormon Temple was begun in 1853 and not completed until forty years later when the
capstone was lowered in place (1892). It was built of granite blocks that were individually hauled by
ox teams until a railroad line was later completed. Since then other significant buildings were added.
The tallest spire is capped with a large gold-leaf statue of the angel Moroni which has special meaning in the faith.
The temple is considered to be a most holy place in the Mormon religion.
As such a lot of attention and resources are contributed to its design, construction and interior furnishings.
However, due to its sacred nature, it is closed to the public, admission is allowed only for faithful church members.
Today it is used is for performing weddings, baptisms for the dead other important family blessings.
(On Fridays and Saturdays you can see a lot of wedding parties leaving the temple.)
(The only time public admission is ever granted to any Mormon Temple is when
the church holds Open House prior to dedication of a newly
completed structure.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The world renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir holds and public rehersals
every Thursday Night (8 PM) and records its weekly
international radio broadcast every Sunday Morning (9:15 AM) from the Conference Center.

Additionally there are daily organ recitals (noon) and weekly
recitals by the Mormon Youth Chorus (Tues and Wedz at 8PM) and Symphony Concerts and rehersals.

The Tabernacle
Magnificent dome-shaped structure built in 1863 and until 1999 would
host the twice yearly general conference of the LDS Church as well as
weekly performance of the Tabernacle Choir.
It houses a 11,623 pipe organ,
regarded as one of the finest musical instruments in the world. Also
highly regarded for its excellecent acoustical design.

Discover an archeological dig in downtown Salt Lake City.
The remains of the Social Hall were uncovered in 1991 and a museum was erected to preserve them.
There settlers shook off the hardships of frontier life and enjoyed music, dancing, lectures, and the company of good friends.
The museum can be entered through a walkway just east of the ZCMI Center Mall or inside the ZCMI Center Mall at the east escalators.

Assembly Hall
On the southwest corner of Temple Square is the Assembly Hall, a charming Gothic-style building with lovely stained-glass windows.
This jewel of a building was constructed by Latter-day Saint pioneers in 1877.
Temple Square Concert Series
Today in this historic setting, visitors can enjoy complimentary hour-long concerts featuring local and international artists
every Friday and Saturday evening in the Assembly Hall. Tickets are not required, but admittance is for those eight years of age and older.
- Summer Concerts in the Park - held in the Brigham Young Historic Park on the southeast corner of State Street and Second Avenue. They begin at 8:00 P.M. during June and July and 7:30 P.M. during August.
- Christmas Concerts on Temple Square - During the Christmas season, concerts are held Tuesday through Saturday with outstanding performers to delight audiences.

The Conference Center, located to the north of Temple Square, was completed in April of 2000.
The auditorium in the Conference Center seats 21,000, and a separate theater in the building seats an additional 850.
The building is constructed of granite from the same quarry which provided the granite for the Salt Lake Temple.

The Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the world's largest collection of genealogical information.
In 1894 the Church founded the Genealogical Society of Utah to gather records that help people trace their ancestry.
Today the library has records of more than 2 billion names in data bases; 2.4 million rolls of microfilm; and 278,000 books.
