The International Olympic Committee has decided to award the organization of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games to the city of Salt Lake City. - Juan Antonio Samaranch, President, International Olympic COmmittee, June 16, 1995, Budapest, Hungary. Salt Lake City was selected by the IOC by the widest voting margin in history to host the 2002 Winter Games. (SLC - 54 votes, Sion, Switzerland and Ostersund, Sweden - 14 votes, Quebec, Canada - 7 votes.) Never before has a city been so ready to play host so far in advance as SLC. Never before has a city the size of SLC been selected to host the winter games. Don't miss this opportunity of a lifetime.
Competition is tentatively scheduled for 70 medal events in 7 sports with 179 ticketed events. More than 1.7 million tickets are expected to be available. Tickets go on sale October 2000. This event is expected to draw over 240,000 spectators and a television audience of 3 billion.
Medal ceremonies are scheduled to be held nightly at Olympic Plaza in city center.
Average temperature in SLC in February is 43.6 degrees Fahrenheit
(6 degrees celcius). The Wasatch Mountain range receives an annual average
of 530 inches of snowfall.
An estimated 12,000 media representatives are expected. The Main Press
Center and International Broadcast Center will be housed in the Salt Palace
Convention Center. World TV Audience estimated at 3 billion.
4,000 athletes and coaches will be housed at the Olympic Village on the University of Utah campus, which is adjacent to the ympic Stadium, 10 minutes from city center, and between 10 and 55 minutes from all venues. Construction of new facilities completed in 1999. Before and after
the Olympics these facilities will serve as student housing.
