    The Great Salt Lake is 75 miles long, 35 miles wide but averages only 15 feet deep. A remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville, the Great Salt Lake covers more than 2,000 square miles and is several times saltier than the ocean. The lake attracts more than 257 species of birds, depending on the season. The lake itself supports no life except brime shrimp and colonial algae. It is gradually decreasing in size as its main rivers (Bear, Jordon and Weber) are diverted for other uses.

    Saltair Resort

    This giant moorish style palace was built in 1893 on the south shore of the Great Salt Lake. For many years it was a popular family resort destination known as the Coney Island of the West. It burned down thrice, 1925, 1931 and again in 1970. It has been rebuilt and serves today mostly as a hip-hop music concert venue.

    State Marina offers spectacular views of sunsets over the Great Salt Lake and provides marina access for sailors, sculling enthusiasts, other boaters, and bird watchers. The lake attracts more than 257 species of birds, depending on the season.

    Antelope Island State Park

    The largest island in the Great Salt Lake and home to a roaming herd of 600 bison. Pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep also share the rangelands that overlook the desert lake. Opportunities to view wildlife are available on backcountry trails, which are open to horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. A modern visitor center offers information on the island’s unique biology, geology and history.
    Annual Bison Roundup - An annual October event to gather the bison off the range and haze them to the corrals on the north end of Antelope Island. Horse riders will have two and a half days to haze the bison northward.

    Lagoon Amusement Park
    An older resort theme park located 17 miles north of Salt Lake City in Farmington. Here you will find 35 thrill rides, six-acre beachfront waterpark and historic pioneer village. Additionally there is live entertainment, shops, games and food.

    Golden Spike National Historic Site - Promontory Summit

    Completion of the world's first transcontinental railroad was celebrated here where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads met on May 10, 1869. The event is re-enacted every year on the same date. The annual Railroader's Festival is held the second Saturday in August, and the Winter Steam Demonstration and Film Festival are the last weekend in December. Working replicas of the 1869 steam locomotives 'Jupiter' and '119' are in operation from May-October. Includes 9-mile auto tour and ranger program. Recreation activities include biking, hiking and wildlife viewing.

    Morton Thiokol Rocket Display - Promontory Summit
    Located off SR-83 about 25 miles west of Brigham City - just a few miles past the golden spike turnoff;
    The Morton Thiokol company (now owned by ATK) manufactured over the years a number of famous solid-propellant rocket boosters, including several types of ICBM's and the Space Shuttle Boosters, at a facility near here. Full scale prototypes of many of these are on display in this outdoor setting.

    Willard Bay State Park

    Willard Bay located in the northeast corner of the Great Salt Lake flood plain in northern Utah. Its 9,900 acres of fresh water provide boating, waterskiing and year-round fishing for crappie, walleye, wiper and catfish. Willard Bay State Park is popular for camping. Two state-owned facilities, North and South Marinas, are available to visitors.

    Gunnison Island
    One of the largest white pelican rookeries in the world. Over 10,000 bidrs flock here in spring. Located near upper west shore of lake.

    Spiral Jetty
    North Shore access through Golden Spike National Historic Site; Jetty Weblink; Robert Smithson's monumental earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) is located on the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Using black basalt rocks and earth from the site, the artist created a coil 1500 feet long and 15 feet wide that stretches out counterclockwise into the translucent red water.

    Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

    74,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge consisting of marsh, open water and mudflats. It is the largest of its kind. Managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Bear River is visited by almost 5 million birds including rare species such as the tundra swan, white-faced ibis and western grebe.

    Ogden Bay Wildlife Management Area
    Enter from west end of Ogden's 12th Street;
    Located at the mouth of the Weber River where bird species utilizing these remnants of fresh water marshland are too numerous to mention. Residents include Peregrine Falcon, American Bittern, Hooded Merganser, Northern Shrike (winter), or Virginia Rail. Also home to ducks, geese, herons and egrets.
