Hovenweep National Monument

Hovenweep, a Ute Indian word for "deserted valley", is
a collection of large ancient indian cliff dwellings scattered
between Utah and Colorado. A large community of early Pueblo
Indians flourished here from about 300AD to 1250AD when extended
droughts and possibly warfare forced them to move elsewhere.
Little is known about the inhabitants of Hovenweep except for
the remarkable ruins they left behind. There are six predominant
ruins groups, all remarkable for their square, oval, circular and
D-shaped towers and multi-room layouts. Most are difficult to locate,
consult with the ranger at Square Tower Ruins beforehand:
- Square Tower Ruins - best preserved group and easiest to find in Utah
- Cajon Ruins - Utah
- Holly Ruins - Colorado
- Hackberry Canyon - Colorado
- Cutthroat Castle - Colorado
- Goodman Point Ruins - Colorado
