Flaming Gorge is a 91 mile long reservoir of the Green River. Straddeling the Wyoming/Utah border, it is reached from either the north or south by US-191. Mapped by explorer John Wesley Powell in 1869, it is famous for its scenery and excellent fishing.

Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam was started in 1958 and today rises some 502 above the colorful bedrock to form Flaming Gorge Reservoir. At full capacity (elev 6045 ft) it impounds 42,042 acres area of the Green River.

Open to public use year-round, many facilities close during the winter.

Fishing
One of the premier fishing destinations in the U.S. Species include: German brown, lake, rainbow and cutthroat trout; small-mouth bass; and kokanee salmon. Fishing is permitted year-round but a license is required from either Utah or Wyoming. Ice-fishing is popular during winter months.
