Popular recreational activities here include camping, hiking, horseback riding, fishing motorboating, hunting, mountain biking and wintersports. Motorized ATV's and Snowmobiles are allowed only on designated trails. It also includes three unspoiled wilderness areas - Lone Peak, Mount Nebo and Mount Timpanogas.

    Timpanogas Cave National Monument

    National Park Rangers guide visitors on hour-long, interpretative tours through the caves. Closed Oct-April.

    Snowmobile Trails
    The Uinta National Forest has many designated snowmobile routes however, just like ATV's, snowmobiles are only allowed on designated routes and areas.

    Deer Creek State Park
    Deer Creek State Park lies in the southwest corner of beautiful Heber Valley and consistently provides some of Utah's finest year-round fishing. Predictable canyon winds make Deer Creek extremely popular for boating, wind surfing, sunbathing, swimming and sailboating.

      Wilderness areas are generally over 5,000 acres in size and may contain ecological, geological, or other features of scientific, educational, scenic, or historical value. Wilderness is defined as a portion of land set aside by an Act of Congress that will remain unspoiled for future generations.

      Lone Peak Wilderness Area
      31,165 acres (20,829 acres on the Uinta NF, 10,336 acres on the Wasatch-Cache NF). This area contains very rugged terrain with narrow canyons and high peaks, including the Little Matterhorn at 11,326 feet and Lone Peak at 11,253 feet. Snow often remains on these alpine peaks until midsummer.

      Mount Nebo Wilderness Area
      This 27,010-acre reserve contains Mount Nebo (11,877 elev) the highest point in the Wasatch Range. Devil's Kitchen Geologic Site, a unique sandstone outcrop is adjacent to the eastern wilderness boundary.

      Mount Timpanogas Wilderness Area
      Abundant rugged terrain with waterfalls and summer wildflowers are found here. The summit of Mount Timpanogos is 11,753 feet and is very popular hiking trail. The summit is accessed by two trailheads: Timpooneke and Aspen Grove.

      High Uintas Wilderness
      High wilderness country that includes 276,157 acres of the Ashley National Forest and 180,530 acres of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. (Not part of Uinta N.F.) Elevations range from 6,000 feet to over 13,500 feet.

      Wildlife
      Bobcats, mule deer, elk, and moose are commonly seen; black bears and mountain lions exist but are seldom seen because of their elusive nature.
      Black Bear - (ursus americanus) is fairly common in Utah, where it can be found primarily in large forested areas. Contrary to its name, the black bear is not always black; the species varies in color from reddish to light brown to black.

      Campgrounds - Spanish Fork Ranger District

    • Maple Bench - Elev 5800 - 5 miles south of Payson on Nebo Loop, canyon trails and fishing at small lake
    • Paysons Lake - Elev 8000 - fishing, swimming & nature trail - Nebo Loop,
    • Balsam - Elev 6000 - right fork of Hobble Creek Canyon, offers scenic canyon stream fishing.
    • Cherry - Elev 5200 - right fork of Hobble Creek Canyon, offers scenic canyon stream fishing.
    • Blackhawk - Elev 8000 - 16 miles south of Payson on Nebo Loop - includes group campsites and horse trails.

    • Hope - Elev 7700 - On Squaw Peak Road, five miles past US-198.
    • Altamont - Elev 7200 Group Campsite in forest wilderness 8.5 miles up American Fork Canyon
    • Granite Flat - Elev 6800 - Scenic canyon stream setting allows for fishing and kayaking next to Tibble Fork.
    • Little Mill - Elev 6000 - Family campsites next to SR-92 in American Fork Canyon -
