This vacation resort community is less congested then Gatlinburg, instead of big resort hotels Townsend consists of mainly vacation cabin rentals. Locals refer to is as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies. Popular in springtime as the wildflowers bloom and also in the autumn as the leaves change color.
A number of national park trails start from here, including the excellent Cades Cove Loop autotour, which is 14 mile journey into some prime area for hiking and watching for wildlife. Deer are plentiful and other occasional visitors include bear, fox, coyote, mountain lion, raccoons and much more.
Additional vacation adventure opportunities are less than 10 miles away at Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Townsend, Dollywood and Great Smokies NP.
Tuckaleechee Caverns

Guided tours and lighted walkways thru one of the greatest natural wonders under the Great Smokies Mountains.
These caverns include big rooms, underground streams and waterfalls and many unusual limestone formations.
Unique wildlife including pygmy bats and blind salamanders and are usually readily visible.
