Missouri

Welcome to Independence, Missouri. This placed has had several prominent roles in history:

  • Birthplace of U.S. President Harry S. Truman
  • 1821 starting point of the Santa Fe Trail
  • 1831-1839 history of the Mormon Church (Both LDS/RLDS)

    Since 1931, this region (Jackson County) has figured quite predominantly in the history the Mormon religion. Historical sites figure predominantly to either or both of these two major sects:

    • LDS - Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (based in Utah)
    • RLDS - Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Independence)

    Prominent Points of Interest:

      Liberty Jail
      Restored version, in cutaway form, of the original 1833 jail where Mormon prophet Joseph Smith was confined 1838-39. While here he recorded several revelations on doctrine for the Mormon Church.

      LDS (Mormon) Visitors Center
      Exhibits, artifacts, displays and film about Christianity, the life of Jesus Christ and history of the Mormon Church.

      RLDS World Headquarters
      World Headquarters of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Museum is across the street in new (1994) temple. Main chamber has 110-rank organ - daily recitals at 3PM (Jun-Aug) and at 3PM Sunday (rest of year).


Nevada

    Mormon Station State Historic park
    Founded in 1849 by Mormon traders sent west by Brigham Young, Genoa was the first permanent settlement in Nevada. The first session of the Nevada territorial legislature convened here in 1859 and drafted a cause to be separated from Utah Territory.
    Restored log stockade and trading post built in 1851 in the Carson Valley to resupply pioneers before they continued westward over the Sierra Nevadas to California. Museum with state history exhibits onsite.

    Mormon Handcart Visitors Center - Wyoming

    Between 1856 and 1860 many early Mormon pioneers traveled through here by means of handcarts. Although most early pioneers traveled west using a covered wagon and team of oxen, there were many who couldn't afford such travel accommodations. Center features historic displays, handcart treks and overnight camping.
