    1,398,800 acres of scenic, slow-moving, subtropical, marshy wilderness protected since 1947. Draining into Florida Bay and covered in places by tall prairie grasses and mangrove forests, this parks is best known for its rich and varied wildlife of crocodiles, alligators, manatees, ospreys, bald eagles and herons.

    Skin-Diving
    There are many opportunities to explore sunken wrecks, reefs and underwater gardens in the area.

  • Matheson Hammock Park - Good territory both to the north and south.
  • Fowley Rocks Light - near Key Biscayne

    Watersports
    There is a great cluster of watersports outfitters and equipment rental shops along the 79th Street Causeway. While Florida does not have the best surf in the country, there are a few places where you can try to catch a wave.

  • Biscayne Bay - Lots of space for water-skiing and jetskiis.
  • Miami Beach - 10.5 mile beachfront facing the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Pier Park - Surf beach
  • Haulover Beach - Surf beach

    Metro-Dade County maintains over 138 miles of bike trails have a free trail map available at (305) 857-4507.

    Simpson Park

    This park features many nature trails that are a popular escape for both residents and tourists.

    Big Cypress National Preserve

    The Big Cypress National Reserve was created in 1974 to protect 646,000 acres on the north side of Everglades National Park . This area is not easily assessible to the general public and is primarily meant to help protect the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades.

    Birding and wildlife viewing are excellent during the winter season along the scenic drives.

    Visitor Center
    Open All Year 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Exc: Dec 25); (941) 695-4111;
    Location: On Tamiami Trail (U.S.41) approximately half-way between Naples and Miami.

    The visitor center offers a 15-minute movie about the preserve, a wildlife exhibit and book sales.

    Scenic Trails

  • The Florida Trial - Major Hiking Trial that cuts a 30 mile path thru this reserve and is one method to explore this region.
  • The Tree Snail Hammock Nature Trail - is a short, self-guided trail located on Loop Road.
  • The Loop Road - enjoy liesurely wildlife viewing on a 26-mile, single-lane, unimproved road beginning and ending on highway 41.
  • Turner River Road - and Birdon Road form a u-shaped, 17-mile graded-dirt drive.

    Campgrounds
    Campgrounds may close seasonally or temporarily for repairs or resource concerns. Please contact the visitor center for current campground information. Visitor Center phone number is 239-695-1201.

  • Bear Island - Primitive camping with no water or rest room facilities.
  • Midway - Primitive camping with no water or rest room facilities.
  • Mitchell's Landing - Primitive camping with no water or rest room facilities.
  • Monument - Monument campground has flush toilets and water available. An outside, cold water shower is also available.
  • Pinecrest - Primitive camping with no water or rest room facilities.

    The Everglades is essentially a slow moving freshwater river, over 50 miles wide and just a few inches deep, originating at Lake Okeechobee and draining into Florida Bay. Much of the area is a collection of mangroves waterways, sawgrass marsh, hammocks and salt prairies.

    Adjacent to the park and part of the Everglades wilderness are Everglades City (the backdoor entrance) and Big Cypress National Reserve, a protected area that helps to safeguard the fragile Everglades ecosystem. These areas offer additional opportunities to explore and enjoy the Everglades.
