The land with almost omnipresent sunshine, the Greater Miami area radiates warmth and sophistication year-round. Most tourists, don't realizes that this metropolis centers around two separate and distinct major cities - Miami and Miami Beach.

Miami (pop: 373,000) only came to life after 1895 when railroad magnate Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railroad further south from Palm Beach. By the 1920's, the area had been heavily settled by wealthy socialites, not-so-wealthy retirees and working-class blacks who found labor in the many local resorts. In 1959, another wave immigrants arrived from Cuba.

Miami Beach (pop: 90,200) is located on the opposite side of Biscayne Bay. In the early 1900's, developer John Collins promoted the island as a upscale residential community and by the 1920's the land boom was in full swing. Today the many oceanfront boulevard (Collins Avenue) is lined with high-rise resort hotels that look out east over the Atlantic Ocean and west over the bay to the Miami skyline.

Miami is the main commercial and financial hub of the region and principle gateway to trade with Central and South American and The Caribbean. It is also a major international financial hub with offices of over 76 international banking firms and 250 multinational corporations. The economy of both cities is heavily linked to tourism.

Movies, TV, and fashion shoots have made glittery Miami world-famous again, bringing back the glory days of the 50's and earlier, when the city was well known for its palacial resorts, topname entertainment and spectacular weather.

A recent nationwide survey voted Miami as "The Most Laid-Back City in America."

MainTour Miami Florida Vacation Adventure also includes much of the surrounding region.
