    Holocaust Memorial
    1933-1945 Meridian Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139; (305) 538-1663; Memorial Website;
    Open: Daily 9AM-9PM; Free Admission;

    This memorial is dedicated to the over six million jews that died under the hands of the Nazi Government during their rule of Germany from January 30, 1933 to their surrender on May 7, 1945. The main edifice is a 42-foot sculptured bronze arm rising skyward. A series of vignettas portray victims helping victims and a meditation garden.
    Dome of Contemplation - An eternal flame of remembrance.

    In the fall of 1984, a small group of Holocaust survivors formed a committee dedicated to building a permanent memorial to the memory of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. With full cooperation from the City of Miami Beach Commission, the present site at Meridian Avenue and Dade Blvd. was designated to receive the Memorial. Kenneth Treister, architect and sculptor, was entrusted with interpreting the Holocaust into a structure which would memorialize its victims, serve as solace to its survivors, and also inform with factual representations in pictures and words of the 20th century's greatest human crime. The Holocaust Memorial took over four years to be built, reaching its final stage at dedication ceremonies on Sunday February 4, 1990, with Elie Wiesel, Nobel laureate as guest speaker.

    The visitor to the Memorial will at first be met by a visual sensation of contrasting elements: the brightness of the luminous Jerusalem stone, which represents the basic building material for the Memorial, and the stark, somber black granite, which lines the walls; another contrast is offered by the stillness of water in the reflecting pool with its majestic lily pads of uncommon dimension, and the azure sky reflecting its patterns in the water, almost competing with the somber reminder of the site's purpose - the reflecting shapes provided by the Memorial's sculpture.

    Various artwork exhibits on display include:

  • The Beginning - The first sculpture is of a mother and two nestling children fearful as the signs of the Holocaust first appear. Their faces ask "can it happen?"
  • The Arbor of History - A semicircular colonnade of Jerusalem stone columns support a wooden arbor with white bougainvillea vines.
  • A Garden of Meditation - a serene and peaceful garden, composed of a large plaza of Jerusalem stone, a 200-foot-diameter water lily pond, and a classic semicircular colonnade and arbor... all set against a backdrop of a dense green palm forest.
  • The Dome of Contemplation - area enclosed by a dome and semicircular wall with an eternal memorial flame and inscription from the Twenty-Third Psalm.
  • The Lonely Path - a dark and lonely stone tunnel illuminated by this slats of sunlight,
  • The Sculpture of Love and Anguish - A giant outstretched arm, tattooed with a number from Auschwitz, rises from the earth,
  • A Series of Vignettes - Bronze tormented figures precariously cling to the skin trying miraculously to escape.
  • Sensing Both Love and Fear - The free-standing bronze figures
  • The Memorial Wall -
  • The Final Sculpture -
  • Never Shall We Forget - The totality of the Holocaust can not be created in stone and bronze
