Indian Key State Historic Site

Located about a half mile southeast of Lower Matecumbe Key is this 10-acre uninhabited island. This was the lavish paradise of notorious wrecker Capt. Jacob Housman, but was destroyed in 1840 during an Indian uprising. The ruins of houses and cisterns are now covered by vegetation. The island is accessible only by boat. It was the first county seat of Dade County.

Lignumvitae Key State Botanical Site

Owing to its high elevation and careful management by former owner W. Matheson, Lignumvitae Key exhibits a unique virgin plant community, particularly West Indian hardwood hammock, a forest type tree that use to cover most of the Upper Keys. The Matheson House, built of coral in 1919, remains unchanged. The Spanish wall extends the length of the island. The island is accessible only by boat.

Long Key State Park

849-acre preserve located near Layton Florida. Camping, boating, fishing, diving activities are available here as well as two pleasant island hiking trails. The Spanish called this place Rattlesnake Key because of the island configuration. Very popular destination for bonefishing.
