NPS Website;
8,500 acre preserve established in 1957 to protect the endangered Key Deer located mostly on Big Pine Key and No Name Key.
Refuge is home to the imperiled tropical hardwood hammock habitat and 22 federally listed endangered and threatened species of plants and animals, five of which are found nowhere else in the world.
Key Deer - This is the cutest little deer you'll ever see. It is the smallest subspecies
of the Virginia White-tail and stands no higher than 3-foot at the shoulder. It is believed to have migrated here from the
mainland thousands of years ago and is found nowhere else. A few years ago it was almost totally extinct but now there
is a population of about 750 roaming Big Pine and other nearby keys, totally unafraid of humans. Wildlife officials hope to establish colonies on nearby islands.

Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge
28950 Watson Blvd., Big Pine Key, FL 33043-0510; (305) 872-2239;
NPS Website;
186,000 acres of mostly marine preserve established in 1938. The uplands portion of GWHNWR are all on unpopulated
islands, on the north side of the lower Florida Keys bordering the Gulf of Mexico, in an area called
“the Backcountry.” It stretches from north of Marathon (90 miles SW of Miami) to north of Key West, FL (130 miles SW of Miami). Accessible only by boat.
Refuge includes mostly mangrove islands and wetlands, with a few sandy beaches and dunes that are critical nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles.
It represents the last of the off-shore (and raccoon free) islands in the Lower Florida Keys available as critical nesting, roosting, wading, and loafing habitat for over 250 avian species - particularily wading birds.
The area managed is overwhelmingly (96 percent) marine environment including large sand flats surrounding the islands that are used extensively by foraging wading birds, significant seagrass meadows, patch coral reefs, and coastal mangrove communities.
All of the refuge managed islands within the GWHNWR are closed in accordance with the Executive Order that established it in 1938.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
P.O. Box 500368; Marathon, FL 33050; (305) 743-2437;
The 2,800 square nautical mile Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) surrounds the
entire archipelago of the Florida Keys and includes the productive waters of Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico
and the Atlantic Ocean. Cultural resources are also contained within the sanctuary. The proximity of coral
reefs to centuries old shipping routes has resulted in a high concentration of shipwrecks and an abundance of artifacts.
The Sanctuary includes three major habitats - coral reef, mangroves and seagrasses.
North America's only living coral barrier reef and the third longest barrier reef in the world
(following Australia and Belize) lies about six miles seaward of the Florida Keys (a 220-mile long
string of islands extending south and west of the Florida mainland), making it a unique national treasure
of international notoriety. Coral reefs contain more varieties of life than any other marine environment.
They are part of a fragile interdependent ecosystem that includes mangroves and seagrasses that grow
both on the ocean and bay side of the Florida Keys.
