At 42 miles, Key Largo is the first and longest of the Florida Keys
and it is linked to the mainland by the first of 42 bridges of the Overseas Highway,
US-1.
The main feature here is the opportunity to explore the Florida Reef
at John Pennecamp State Park located at MM102.5 in North
Key Largo. This is a 78 sq.mi. preserve of living coral reef, probably one
of the most colorful in the world. Excellent location for snorkeling,
scuba diving and glass-bottom boat tours.

Located directly across from the entrance to Pennekamp State Park,
this museum exhibits many artifacts recovered from sunken wrecks dating back to the
17th-century. A reconstruction of a shipwreck site illustrates the process
of underwater archeology.

Refuge includes disturbed man-made channels.
Upland portions include the last stands of high tropical hardwood hammock and are critical habitat to Key Largo woodrat and cotton mouse
and the only federally listed endangered insect in Florida: Schaus’ swallowtail butterfly.
