Overview : US-1 The Overseas Highway

Designated on maps as Federal Highway US-1 with over 100 miles of roadway, the Overseas Highway runs across a long series of highway bridges through the length of the Florida Keys. In many places along its stretch, you can watch the sunrise over the Atlantic to the east and then later watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico to the west.

History : US-1 The Overseas Highway

Large parts of it were built on the former alignment of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway which was completed in 1912. The Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 when a 17-foot storm surge caused heavy loss of life and property. The Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the State of Florida.

Many of the original railway truss bridges have been replaced by modern reinforced concrete highway bridges. The highway first opened to vehicle traffic in 1938 as a combination of roadway, bridges and ferry links.

Noteworthy Bridges : US-1 The Overseas Highway

Parts of highway US-1 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of these bridges are no longer used today but continue to serve as fishing piers:
Seven Mile Bridge - the longest segmental bridge in the world.
    Bahia Honda Bridge -
    Long Key Bridge -
Card Sound Bridge - Destroyed by fire in 1944.

The Mile Markers : US-1 The Overseas Highway

Locations along the Overseas Highway are commonly given as "Mile Markers" with a corresponding roadsign. Numbering starts in Key West, and increases up the path of the highway over the keys. Businesses in the Keys list their locations by "Mile Markers", adding decimal parts to more precisely indicate locations between mile marker signs.
