Fort Lauderdale (pop. 152,400) is a city of islands, rivers, bays and canals where the boat is just as important as a car for transportation. Residents and visitors frequent the boutique shops and galleries of Las Olas Boulevard and also the the nightlife and museums of Riverwalk. Originally settled by Maj. William Lauderdale in 1838, but the town did not get noticed as a resort community until about 1911. Besides being a popular resort area, it is also a leading commercial center playing an important role in the marine and citrus grove industries. To really experience the beauty of Fort Lauderdale, you need to take a scenic drive along Highway A1A (Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd.) where you see over 3 miles of sandy Atlantic Ocean beachfront to the right and the urban waterway city landscape to the left. The Gold Coast water taxis are a very practical means of navigating the many miles of waterways here. Just to the south is Port Everglades, one of the deepest harbors in the Southeastern U.S. where 10 modern terminals provide facilities for Caribbean bound cruise ships.
