Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is part of the Grand Strand, a big sixty mile long sand bank runs along the upper coast from the North Carolina border down to the outlet of the Santee River. It separates the Intercoastal Waterway from the Atlantic Ocean. Many popular tourism destinations are found here including North Strand, Myrtle Beach, South Strand, and Georgetown.

Before the Civil War, wealthy plantation owners in the area had turned Pawleys Island into one of the first summer resorts on the Atlantic coast. However development of the Grand Strand didn't really begin until the first railroad reached the island in 1901.
