Popular for bird-watching, including the Bald Eagle, Lake Santa Margarita is a popular destination for nearby residents and visitors alike. Created in 1941 when the Salinas Dam was built to block the Salinas River. The lake is stocked with bass, trout, catfish, and bluegill. Thousands of acres of surrounding wildlands hold miles of trails to explore by foot, bike or horse. At White Oak Flats is a campground, kids playground and swimming pool. (No swimming in the lake allowed.)



California Coastal National Monument
Established in 2000, the California Coastal National Monument runs the entire length of the California coast (1,100 miles) between Oregon and Mexico, extends 12 nautical miles from the shoreline, and encompasses thousands of BLM administered islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles above mean high tide. These provide forage and breeding grounds for significant populations of coastal birds and sea mammals.

Local Wildlife
Elephant Seals - Large colony lives along the coast at Piedras Blancas, north of Cambria. Over 1,800 new pups born each year that will grow to over 3,000 pounds. Peak season Dec-Febr.
Sea Otters - These entertaining creatures are best spotted in early morning or late afternoon in the water along Morro Rock or Montana de Oro's State Park.
California Gray Whales - These mammoth creatures can be seen right along the coast during their annual migration from Alaska to Baja California, Dec-Mar.
Monarch Butterflies - Thousands of the beautiful butterflies arrive every winter. Best seen at Morro Bay State Beach, Montana de Oro State Park or Pismo State Beach.

Bird-Watching
San Luis Obispo constantly gets great reviews by the Audubon Society. Local sightings include Peregrine Falcons, sandhill cranes and brown pelicans.
Bald Eagles - Our national symbal can be found near the inland lakes of the north county, particularly Lopez Lake, Lake Santa Margarita and Nacimento Lake.
Heron Rookery State Reserve - This dense stand of tall eucalyptus trees overlooking Morro Bay is the biggest great blue heron rookery along the Central Coast.
California Condor - The home for this endangered bird is in the nearby Los Padres National Forest.
