The Chargers were one of the original eight teams of the AFL founded in 1960. After spending their first year in Los Angeles they moved to San Diego. The AFL merged with the NFL in 1970. In the 34 years since then, the Chargers have made seven trips to the playoffs and three appearances in the AFC Championship game. At the end of the 1994 season, the Chargers faced the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX and fell 49-26. Southern California has three major baseball franchises, two major basketball and hockey clubs but only one NFL team (go figure).
