    The 4,235-acre Mission Bay Park is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country and gets over 15 million visitors annually. The park offers a wide range of recreational activities including paths for walking and jogging, and children's playgrounds.

    First discovered and named “False Bay” by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, where historically, the San Diego River has shifted its terminus between here and the San Diego Bay to the south. In the 1940's throught 1960's, the City of San Diego developed these tidelands into a public recreation and boating area.

    Recreational Activities
    Mission Bay boasts 27 miles of shoreline, 19 of which are soft, sandy beaches with eight locations designated as official swimming areas. Mission Bay offers boat docks and launching facilities, sailboat and motor rentals, bike/walk paths, basketball courts, and playgrounds for children.
    Fiesta Island Time Trials - San Diego Bicycle Club

  • Bike paths - 14 miles of bike trails circle the Mission Bay area.
  • Dog Walk - Some areas in Mission Bay Park allow dogs to be on leashes and other areas such as Fiesta Island are leash free.
  • Fishing - permitted in all areas of Mission Bay, except in areas designated for swimming, water skiing and personal water craft use. Fishing is also not allowed from any bridge.

    More Mission Bay Parks
    A number of grassy picnic and play parks and beaches line the shores of Mission Bay. Contact the Permit Center for permits to host large parties.
    Bonita Cove - near South Mission Beach - a large playground with a tot lot and there is access to the water with a lifeguard on duty.
    Crown Point - north shore area - This large grassy park near the bay has fire rings, picnic tables, and barbeque grills. There is also a boat launch and basketball courts.
    De Anza Cove - at 3000 E Mission Dr - Swimming, boating and water skiing are allowed and there is a lifeguard on duty for the summer months.
    Mariner’s Point - large sandy peninsula off of Bonita Cove. The tip of Mariner’s Point is a Least Tern nesting area.
    Mission Point - far south end of Mission Blvd - playground, picnic tables, park benches, fire rings and a path for jogging or bike riding.
    Playa Cove - east shore located south of the Visitors Information Center - swimming area, basketball courts and picnic areas.
    South Shores Park - located just east of Sea World - mainly a small park for boating purposes with a boat ramp and RV Dump.
    Sunset Pointe - located at the northwest corner of Dana Basin, to the left of the Dana Landing Resort.
    Tecolate Shores - south of the Hilton on the East Shore - this swim area includes a playground, picnic tables, barbeque grills, fire rings and a path for jogging
    Ventura Cove - swim and picnic area located in the 1100 block of West Mission Bay Drive

    Wildlife Preserves
    These habitat areas are designated to protect local wildlife including the endangered California Lease Tern which will abandon its nest if disturbed. You can see them hovering high above the water's surface, then plunging in head first in pursuit of small fish, or skimming low over the water. Most of these areas are off limits to the general public.

  • Mariner's Point - This open sandy beach is a prime nesting area of the Least Tern.
  • Perez Cove - One of San Diego County's best known nesting sites for the Great Blue Heron.
  • Kendall-Frost - protects sixteen acres of salt marsh adjacent to the salt marsh, mudflats and open waters
  • Tecelote Creek - Mud-flat duck migration habitat area
  • Fiesta Island - Several areas for protected shorebirds
  • Southern Preserve - The flood control channel offers good opportunities to view and photograph a great number of magnificent waterfowl including year round residents such as the osprey, herons, egrets, waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, and terns are year round residents.

Tour Mission Beach
The center of The Strand a two mile sandy stretch that is the most popular beach in the City of San Diego. The boardwalk parallels the beach and is enjoyed for walking, biking, skating, and related activities. The main lifeguard station is located at the foot of Ventura Place by the Belmont Roller Coaster.

This desert oasis is a most popular warm-weather winter retreat with over 100 championship golf courses to play on, fine dining and great entertainment.

    Fiesta Island is a large area of land centrally located in Mission Bay that is popular for recreational water sports. Permits for this location are usually for Over the Line tournament, walks/runs, bicycle races/time trials and other special events. There is a a permitted water ski area in Hidden Cove and permits for water skiing only are available from the Lifeguards at their headquarters, 2581 Quivera Court.

    Since 1953 this very popular summer entertainment features a form of softball, limited to 1,200 teams of three persons each, playing almost 2,400 games in two weekends with 52,000 expected to attend.

    San Diego Youth Aquatic Center
    Youth watersports and marine biology camp facility owned by City of San Diego located on the eastern shore of Fiesta Island. It is home to Camp Fiesta Island (a boy scout summer camp), SeaCamp oceanography youth club and San Diego's Kayak Team. It is adjacent to Enchanted Cove which is a popular for non-motor based watersports such as Kite Surfing, Small Sailboats, Boardsailing and Kayaking.

    Model Yacht Pond
    Located just south of the Paradise Point Resort, this pond is used to host sailing races for both power and sail model boats. The adjacent lawns are popular for picnics.
    San Diego Argonauts - model boat club meets monthly at the pond.

    Vacation Isle Parks Two great grassy parks with sandy beaches, picnic tables, fire rings and restrooms. Vacation Isle East is located east of the Model Yacht Pond while Vacation Isle West is located to the west of the pond.

    Ski Beach
    Located on east side of Vacation Isle off of Ingraham St, this beach has a large grassy area, a picnic shelter with picnic tables, fire rings and a jogging path. There is a boat launch and ski area on the south side, but no swimming is allowed. There is also a childrens playground adjacent to the picnic shelter.

    Located on the south jetty ocean entrance to Mission Bay Park, is this large grassy park with great views of Mission Bay, the San Diego River and out towards the ocean. There are picnic tables, a picnic shelter, fire rings, and a path for jogging or bike riding.

    A beautiful waterfront setting for your special day - weddings, banquets, receptions, etc. The marina hosts 634 boat slips with quick access to the Pacific Ocean, bait barge, utility hookups, etc.
