All events are free to the public, except for the Sandcastle Ball. Master and amateur sand carving teams from throughout the U.S. and Canada competed for more than $21,000 in cash prizes.

      Tijuana River Refuge

      Historic beach front site contains much of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, an important wildlife habitat. The salt and freshwater marshes give refuge to migrating waterfowl and resident wading birds, such as black-necked stilt, avocet, teal, American widgeon and pelican. The park offers hiking, horse trails, surf fishing and birding.

      Silver Strand State Beach
      Following along the isthmus connecting Coronado Island to Imperial Beach with extensive beachfront facilities on both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Combined with the area’s mild climate, the beaches make Silver Strand one of the area’s finest recreation destinations.
