    Heber Dunes State Vehicle Recr Area - Heber CA
    343 acres area located south of El Centro. It is primarily used for off-road recreation, however, camping, picnicking, and baseball are also popular activities in the park.

    Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recr Area - East Borrego
    42,000 acres of desert terrain, from below sea level to 400 foot elevations. It is a motorcycle, four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicle, and dune buggy use area. The wash-and-ridge terrain includes a butte with dunes and a sand bowl, a blow-sand dune, springs and a camp on a former homestead site. The park has pay showers, picnic tables, shade ramadas, fire rings and a dump station available.

    San Dieguito River Park
    Partially completed Coast-to-Crest wilderness trail follows the path of the San Dieguito Rivier. The Park will someday extend from the ocean at Del Mar to Volcan Mountain, just north of Julian and may even connect with the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park just beyond. It will wind past Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Escondido, Lake Hodges and Lake Sutherland.

    There are six major ski resort areas operating in the San Bernardino Mountains, less than one hour away from the greater metropolitan area. Activities offer include traditional alpine skiing, snowboarding, family winter fun zones, ski schools and more. Ski season usually runs from December to April. And during the off-season, these mountain areas are also a great place to visit to enjoy suberb scenic vistas.

    Otay Valley Regional County Park
    The regional park will extend about 11 miles inland from the southeastern edge of the salt ponds at the mouth of the river, through the Otay River Valley, to the land surrounding both Lower and Upper Otay Lakes. Currently there are no active or passive recreational areas in the park, other than the County-owned and operated facility at Otay Lakes.

      Located just 15 miles north of San Diego, is a major flower growing center, beach resort and antique collection gift shop area.       Camp Pendleton USMC
      The largest amphibious training facility in the nation, Camp Pendleton covers 17 miles of Pacific coastline north of Oceanside. It is home to 35,000 active duty Marines and their dependents of the U.S. 1st Marine Division and related units. Includes two museums open to the public.

      420,000 acres woodlands and mountains with many camping sites and hiking trails.

      Palomar Mountain
      One of the best outdoor locations in San Diego and home to formerly the largest astronimical observatory in the world.

      Tour Salton Sea
      The Salton Sea is California's largest lake. During winter months it is home to over four million birds (representing over 400 species). It is located at about 228 feet below sea level below sea level.

      Tour Imperial Valley Dunes
      Eastern rim of Imperial Valley - Wildlife viewing area and home to several unique species of plants and animals. Very popular area for offroad vehicle activity.

      Other East County Communities

      San Diego Youth Aquatic Center - Mission Bay
      Youth watersports and marine biology camp facility owned by City of San Diego located on the eastern shore of Fiesta Island. It is home to Camp Fiesta Island (a boy scout summer camp), SeaCamp oceanography youth club and San Diego's Kayak Team. It is adjacent to Enchanted Cove which is a popular for non-motor based watersports such as Kite Surfing, Small Sailboats, Boardsailing and Kayaking.

      Kit Carson Park - South Escondido CA
      The park sits in a valley that is approximately five miles west of where Kit Carson fought in the Battle of San Pasqual. A historical monument commemorating the battle is located on Mule Hill, one mile southeast of the park. One hundred acres of the park have been developed and 185 acres have been preserved as natural habitat. Park features include several hiking trails, 5-acre arboretum, ball fields, tennis courts and 3 ponds.
      Queen Califia's Magical Circle - a new park addition, the only American sculpture garden by the internationally acclaimed artist, Niki de Saint Phalle.
      Escondido Sports Center - complex with pro shop, 22,000 square-foot skate park, 2 full-size covered roller hockey arenas, 1 full-size soccer arena, and 1 "mini" soccer arena. with a Girl Scouts of America Program Center, located at the north end of the park.

      Lake San Marcos Resort and Country Club
      This resort offers the perfect facility for travelers and residents. Mature landscaping accents two golf courses, two restaurants, tennis courts and two pools. The lake showcases 250 acres of secluded stress-free environment. Ideal weather conditions give the opportunity for golf, tennis, or boating.

      Lake Hodges

      This is the big lake between Rancho Bernardo and Escondido on the San Dieguito River that the I-15 freeway cuts across (built in 1981). Located in a coastal canyon, Lake Hodges offers an environment that serves as a pleasant backdrop to a variety of recreational uses, including fishing, boating, sailing, bike and horseback riding, and picnicking.

      Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve
      This preserve attracts people with its natural beauty and rich natural resources both today and in the past. Native American history within the Preserve dates back as far as 7,000 years ago. The beautiful canyon locale within a 3700-acre open space preserve offers hiking, biking and equestrian trails.

      The Springs at Borrego RV and Golf Resort
      A recreational vehicle resort and luxury nine-hole championship golf course located in the heart of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The RV Park is Big Rig friendly and offers warm weather and many amenities such as swimming pools, hot mineral baths, tennis courts and RV campground facilities.
