    Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
    Old Town San Diego State Historic Park recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Five original adobes are part of the complex, which includes shops, restaurants and a museum. La Casa de Estudillo is a mansion built around a garden courtyard. This park covers a six block area (bounded by Wallace, Juan, Twiggs and Congress sts) re-creating the founding of the first European settlement in California. Presidio Park (located closeby) is the site of California's first mission and military fortress (1769).

    Wood building prefabricated in Maine in 1851 and then shipped around the Horn. San Diego's first newspaper started printing here in 1868.

    El Campo Santo Cemetery

    Whaley House

    First two-story brick built in Southern California and used as a residence, store, courthouse and thater. Exhibits period furnishings.

    Casa de Bandini
    Completed in 1829 and quickly became the social center of Old Town. The second owner, Albert Seeley, added rooms in the 1850 and opened as the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Today it hosts a Mexican restaurant.

    Drug Store Museum

    Racine and Laramie Store
    Original was built in the 1830's but burned in the Old Town fire of 1872. The store which sold cigars, tobacco and stationery has been restored to its 1869 condition.

    Mexican patriotic celebration of dance, food and historical reenactments in San Diego Old Town. The third largest celebration of cultural, ethnic and historic heritage in the United States, this event draws over 70,000 participants each year.

    Balboa Park San Diego Balboa Park San Diego
    One of the largest urban cultural centers in the USA, Balboa Park is home to over 85 Performing Arts and International Culture Organizations, 15 Museums, the World-Famous San Diego Zoo, Gardens, Hiking and Biking Trails, Theater, Recreational Facilities and Restaurants.

    Balboa Park was established 1868 when the population of San Diego was only a mere 2,000 souls. It consists of 1400 acres of beautiful gardens, grassy picnic area and groves of exotic palm and eucalyptus trees. The original groundswork was done by famed horticulturalist Kate Sessions.

    Two major "World's Fairs" have added substantially to Balboa Park. First, in 1915 the park hosted the Pan-American Exposition. Then, in 1935 the park hosted the California Pacific Exposition. Most of the facilities and museum buildings date back to these grand events.
