    Fort Rosecrans - US Military Reservation
    Fort Rosecrans was created by the US military in 1852 on the southern tip of Point Loma. Two small tracts later were set aside for lighthouse purposes, one at Ballast Point and one at the tip of the reservation. The highlands on the southern tip of Point Loma, allow for the best views of the San Diego city skyline. Before becoming an American territory, this location had previously housed first a Spanish and then later a Mexican garrison (then known as Castillo Guijarros located near today's Ballast Point) assigned to defend this strategic port.

    Cabrillo National Monument - Point Loma
    Located on the tip of Point Loma - this major landmark offers the best scenic views of the San Diego skyline and a host of other great features. It is also a great vista to watch the big ships sail in or out of San Diego Bay. The monument includes a tall statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who is credited with the discovery of San Diego Bay on Sept 28, 1542 and the first European to ever set foot on what is now the US West Coast. There are also several scenic hiking trails down to tidepools along the coast and a terrific vantage point for whale watching.

    Located at the mouth of San Diego harbor, Naval Base Point Loma comprises 316 acres on beautiful but rugged coastline, although the main facilities are located on approximately 30 acres of relatively flat land. It has served primarily as a Submarine Base since 1959. Major warships based here is the Third Fleet command ship Coronado, and the five attack submarines of Submarine Squadron 11.

These provide forage and breeding grounds for significant populations of coastal birds and sea mammals.

    Silver Strand State Beach
    Following along the isthmus connecting Coronado Island to Imperial Beach with extensive beachfront facilities on both the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Combined with the area’s mild climate, the beaches make Silver Strand one of the area’s finest recreation destinations. Camping, fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, water-skiing, volleyball, and picnicking are popular activities.

    Tijuana River Refuge

    Historic beach front site contains much of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, an important wildlife habitat. The salt and freshwater marshes give refuge to migrating waterfowl and resident wading birds, such as black-necked stilt, avocet, teal, American widgeon and pelican. The park offers hiking, horse trails, surf fishing and birding.

    Tijuana River Valley Regional Park - San Ysidro
    This 1638-acre park offers a diverse array of habitats that enhance visitors' experiences -- from dense riparian forests along the Tijuana River to coastal maritime sage scrub on top of Spooner's Mesa. Visitors may hike or ride a horse along miles of trails, or bring your binoculars to see birds in one of the best bird watching spots in the county.
