This early mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra on Nov. 1, 1776. Gardens, arches and Moorish fountains grace the mission grounds. Onsite museum houses exhibits of Native American, Spanish and Mexican history of the mission. Self-guiding tour lets you explore ruins, artifacts, soldier's quarters, cemetary and more.

The mission is famous today as the northern home for the swallows that arrive in mid-March and leave in mid-October for an approximately 6,000 mile migration to Goya, Argentina. As early as 1777, the mission archives had already noted the regular appearance of these birds and a village festival to welcome them had already become tradition.

The mission actually consisted of three churches built 1797-1806 as one of the most ambitious and elaborately adorned of the mission churches. The earthquake of 1812 destroyed the bell tower and heavy roof.

    • Great Stone Church - only ruins remain today
    • New Seven Domed Parish Church - with 104-foot belltower
    • Padre Serra's Church - dedicated 1778 and still used daily
