Griffith Park is a L.A.'s large urban park and is famous as home for the Griffith Observatory, L.A. Zoo and Travel Town. The park consists of 4,100 acres on the east of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There are a number of attractions, recreational facilities and cultural institutions located here along side wilderness areas and 54 miles of equestrian and hiking trails. Orginally part of the Rancho Los Feliz Spanish land grant, it was donated as a urban park to the City of Los Angeles in 1896 by its then owner, Griffith J. Griffith, a Welsh emigrant who made a fortune in gold mining. Mount Hollywood - The famous Hollywood sign can be seen along the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park.
