From its perch overlooking I-405 and the Sepulveda Pass, the Getty Center was one of the biggest art institutions in the world. It comes with 110 acres of land, 1 million square feet of exhibit space and a $1-billion plus price tag and was over ten years in the making. (It is located adjacent to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.) A modern tram system takes you from the parking lot up the hill to the Getty Center campus, where visitors can browse the Getty's vast collection of art that is housed in five gallery pavilions. The Getty Center houses a massive collection of pre-20th century art, European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts and photographs. This facility contains 54 galleries of permanent displays and five cultural institutions, all funded by the Getty Trust. Prominent exhibit items include the following: Pearblossom Highway - David Hockney
Irises - Vincent Van Gogh
Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 - James Ensor
Cosimo I de' Medici - Jacopo da Pontormo
