    Aqua Caliente Cultural Museum
    Location : At the Village Green Heritage Center in the heart of downtown Palm Springs.
    This museum preserves the nature spirit of the Aqua Caliente Band of the Cahuilla Indians. Exhibits include the Tahquitz Canyon Archaeological Collection with over 50,000 artifacts from the oldest and largest village site and is one of the most extensive excavation projects in California.

    The Imperial County Historical Society was organized as the Imperial Valley Pioneers Society in 1928 to preserve the life histories of early settlers. While its name has since changed, its ongoing mission is still to preserve the unique development of the irrigated desert and the people who developed the area's modern history.

    The museum was founded in 1969 to educate the people about the desert. The museum's theme is human adaptation to arid lands. As archaeological knowledge of Imperial Valley has grown through the research of many scholars, so has the Imperial Valley College Desert Museum collection of artifacts which helps lead to a better understanding of arid living.     Alford's Antique Car Museum

    The Alford Distributing Company family collection of antique cars. The collection is predominately American-Made cars such as Fords and Franklins. Imperial Valley memorabilia enhance the museum, which was started with the purchase of a Model “A” Ford for $5.00 many years ago. The cars you see in the museum are all in running condition and have been restored from the ground up to their original state. Most of them are taken out for use in local parades, community events and promotional activities. The museum is arranged in “Era Galleries” from the 1910’s to the 1950’s.

    Old Post Office Pavilion

    Built between 1933 and 1934, the building was one of the last Beaux Arts-style public structures in the United States, and housed postal operations until late in 1985, when it was acquired by the City. Today it houses occasional theater productions.

    San Diego Railroad Museum - Campo CA
    Large collection of vintage locomotives and railcars. Public tours of work shops available. Train rides run twice a day on Sat/Sun (and some holidays) departing at noon and 2:30PM on a 16-mile loop pulled by a vintage diesel or steam locomotive.

    Musuem of World History in Granite

    The 416 Panel History of Humanity is being engraved on 8 granite monuments. This project was launch in 1973 and as of 2007 this project is about 20% complete. Four monuments are each 100 feet long with 60 granite panels, each 40 x 57 in and weighing 477 pounds. E, NW, SE and SW are 67 feet long with 40 panels. Appropriately enough, this monument site is self-designated as the center of the world.

    Mesquite Mine Overlook Trail

    Located 3 miles north of SR-78 on GFOC Road. A one-mile trail leads to an overview of the second largest gold mine in California.

    Old Plank Road
    Location: Grays Well Road alongside I-8;
    From 1915 to 1925, the first highway across the shifting Algodone Sand Dunes was built on a narrow wooden planks. A historic monument and replica of the road can be found about 3 miles west of the I-8 Sand Hills interchange.

    Fossil Canyon
    Located about four miles north of Ocotillo at the end of Painted Gorge Rd. Scenic area noted for its multicolored canyon walls caused by the weathering of copper, iron and sulfur in the rock. The upper part of the gorge contains marine fossils. (Fossils )

    Oyster Shell Beds
    Located along BLM Route Y1945 are remnants of ancient Lake Leconte, which covered most of the Imperial Valley over 6 million years ago. Fossilized oyster shells are all about. (Fossils )

    Tumco Mines
    Located on Gold Rock Ranch Rd, 9 miles north of I-8, 1 mile east of County Hwy 35, 4.5 miles NEof Ogilby in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. Tumco was an early gold mining town.

    Picacho State Park
    4,880 acres located 23 miles north of Winterhaven. Access to a wide stretch of the Colorado River that is popular for water-skiing, camping, fishing, hiking and boating.

    Cibola National Wildlife Refuge
    Cibola NWR is located in the floodplain of the lower Colorado River and surrounded by a fringe of desert ridges and washes. Because of the river’s life sustaining water, wildlife here survive in an environment that reaches 120 degrees in the summer and receives an average of only 2 inches of rain per year.

    Imperial National Wildlife Refuge

    Wildlife habitat along 30 miles of the lower Colorado River in Arizona and California, including the last unchannelized section before the river enters Mexico. Watch at dawn and dusk for desert bighorn sheep and mule deer heading to the river for a drink. Ducks, geese, shorebirds, and other waterbirds flock to the lower Colorado River each year to spend the winter.

    100 years ago Picacho was a gold mining town with 100 citizens. Today the site is a State Park, popular with boaters, hikers, anglers and campers. The park offers diverse scenery, including beavertail cactus, wild burros, bighorn sheep and thousands of migratory waterfowl.
