    The Archdiocese of Los Angeles comprises three counties: Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. It covers 8,762 square miles (22,430 square kilometers) of territory. The total Roman Catholic population, as of 2005, stands at 4,349,267 people living among a total population of 11,258,600.

    There are 288 parishes located in 120 cities throughout the Archdiocese in the three counties. There are seven missions and chapels and nine Eastern Catholic churches. In all, there are a total of 225 Catholic elementary schools serving some 65,000 students, while there are 53 Catholic high schools with about 30,000 students enrolled. Together they comprise one of the three largest school systems in California in either the public or private sector.

    English Cursillo Movement - promotes the creation of groups of Christians who leaven their environments with the Gospel.
    Archdiocese Mission - Pontifical Mission Society dedicated to promoting mission education in local parishes.

    Mission San Gabriel Arcangel - San Gabriel CA - Fourth of the original landmark California missions founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra to serve the local Shoshone indians that came to be known as Gabrielenos.
    Our Lady of the Assumption Church - Claremont CA - Parish church, school and annual feista established in 1947 in Claremont, California.
    St Dorothy Catholic Church - Glendora CA - Parish church, school and annual feista established in Glendora by Los Angeles Archdiocese.

    Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
    Old Town San Diego State Historic Park recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Five original adobes are part of the complex, which includes shops, restaurants and a museum. La Casa de Estudillo is a mansion built around a garden courtyard. This park covers a six block area (bounded by Wallace, Juan, Twiggs and Congress sts) re-creating the founding of the first European settlement in California. Presidio Park (located closeby) is the site of California's first mission and military fortress (1769).

    Serra Museum - Presidio Park
    Includes 120 acres atop Presidio Hill, overlooking Old Town. Active archeological dig continues to make many noteworthy discoveries. Marks the site of the first California Mission built by Father Serra in 1769. Museum exhibits cover Indian, Spanish and Mexican historical periods.

    Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala
    California's First Church

    First of the 21 missions and known as the Mother of the Missions, Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded on July 16, 1769 by Blessed Junipero Serra. It was designated as a Minor Basilica in 1976 by Pope Paul VI. The Mission today is an active Catholic Parish in the Diocese of San Diego.
    Tour Old California Missions - Special Adventure Feature

    Mission San Luis Rey de Francia - Oceanside CA

    Known as the "King of Missions" - Mission San Luis Rey is the largest of the California missions and a national landmark. Franciscan friars at the mission conduct regular tours. This church still holds regular worship services and hosts special functions during the week.

    Mission Santa Barbara - Queen of the Missions
    Located at E. Los Olivos and Laguna Sts; (805) 682-4149;
    Open: Daily 9AM-5PM; Admission: $4 Adult / Child under 12 free;

    Founded Dec 4, 1786 on the Feast of St. Barbara and completed in 1820. This is one of the best preserved of the old Spanish Mission of California. Only mission to stay in continuous use since founding. Original missionary residence and guest rooms are now a museum exhibit. Many examples of early Mexican art including an 1808 Moorish fountain.

    Mission San Antonio de Pala - Pala CA
    Located 6 miles east of I-15 on SR-76. Museum, gift shop and wilderness gardens. San Antonio de Pala was a sub-mission of Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. It was established in 1816. The bell tower is striking in that it is detached from the building; unusual in the mission system.
