Abert Lake
No fish live in the alkaline waters of the lake; however, its dense population of brine shrimp supports a variety of shorebirds.
The lake is also an important stop on the bird migration route known as the Pacific flyway.
During the annual migrations, it hosts tens of thousands of Eared Grebes, Wilson's Phalaropes, Red-necked Phalaropes, American Avocets, Killdeer, Northern shovelers,
Black terns, Forster's Terns, American avocet, White-faced Ibis, Clark's grebes, and Black-necked stilts are common during the summer months.
Canadian geese, Snow geese, Ross’ geese and many duck species are also common. Bird counts have recorded over 20,000 ducks at the lake at one time.
Over 12,000 Ring-billed gulls and California gulls have been counted at the lake as well.
Harney Basin
One of the least populated areas of the contiguous United States, it is located largely in northern Harney County.
It includes Malheur Lake (freshwater) and Harney Lake (saline-alkaline water).

Summer Lake
Summer Lake is a large, shallow, alkali lake in Lake County, of about 20 miles long and 10 miles wide.
The Summer Lake Basin supports more than 250 species of birds including bald eagles, Canada geese, white faced ibis, yellow-headed blackbirds, goshawks, hermit thrushes,
red-tail hawks, great blue herons, and numerous species of ducks. This makes Summer Lake a favorite bird watching and hunting area.
The large marsh on the north side of the lake is a wildlife refuge.
High Desert Grotto
Grotto Caving Club
Dedicated to the discovery and preservation of caves including their study by scientific means.
Deschutes County has over 600 caves and is by far the most cave-rich county in the state of Oregon. But not all of those caves are recommended to the casual visitor.
Some involve strenous hikes, proper gear and equipment, or a tenacity for pushing dangerous and tight passages.
