Hells Canyon is a ten-mile wide canyon located along the Oregon-Idaho border cut by the Snake River.
At 7,993 feet it is North America's deepest river gorge and the most important feature of Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.
Artifacts from prehistoric inhabitants as well as the ruins of early 19th century miners and settlers are visible.
Three hydroelectric dams on the Snake river in Hells Canyon generate approximately 1150 megawatts of electricity.
These dams are the lowest on the Snake river lacking fish ladders of any kind which block native salmon and other fish from migrating upstream.
Hells Canyon includes an adjacent National Recreation Area and Wilderness.

at the highest levels of the Wilderness, with western larch, Douglas fir, and Ponderosa pine found between the two extremes.
Prickly pear cactus and poison ivy are fairly common as well.
Wilderness Wildlife
Black bear, cougar, elk, deer, mountain goat, chukar, and bighorn sheep are common. There have been reports, though unverified,
of grizzly bear in the Wilderness. Reintroduced wolves in Idaho have at least passed through the area, and Peregrine falcon, bald
and golden eagles can also be seen.
