Redwood Coast CA Mount Shasta CA Modoc County CA
The Oregon Coast appears to be pristine but is actually one of the most intensively logged areas on Earth, and the impact of the timber industry on the coastal ecology is enormous. Hidden from view to the casual traveler, the landscape just beyond the coastal highway is radically different than the impression one gets from driving up and down the coast. The entire coast was once covered by enormous ancient rain forests, almost all of which have been logged several times over and replaced by industrial tree farms.
Due to its location, Brookings is subject to winter (and less frequently summer) temperatures considered unseasonably warm for the Oregon Coast. Since 2006, the Winter Art & Chocolate Festival has been held at the Brookings-Harbor High School, featuring local and regional artists and chocolatiers the second weekend in February. The Umpqua Discovery Center, in downtown Reedsport, features local history information provided through interactive media and displays. The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is located three miles east of Reedsport on Oregon Route 38. This area provides an opportunity to view 60-100 Roosevelt elk in their natural habitat year round. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area interpretive center is located at the intersection of Oregon Route 38 and U.S. Route 101. It features interpretive panels, short films, and information about the local area and attractions. Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County. It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Nye Beach, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Rogue Ales. In mid-2011, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will move its base for research ships from Lake Union (in Seattle) to Newport. Lincoln City was incorporated on March 3, 1965, uniting the cities of Delake, Oceanlake and Taft, and the unincorporated communities of Cutler City and Nelscott.
