The city of Astoria is the county seat of Clatsop County, in Northwestern Oregon. Situated near the mouth of the Columbia River, the city was named after the American investor (and first millionaire) John Jacob Astor. His fur trading company founded Fort Astoria at the site in 1810. Astoria was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 1876.
This maritime history museum is located about ten miles from the mouth of the Columbia River in Astoria. It has six exhibit halls and the Lightship Columbia to interpret the rich maritime history of the Pacific Northwest. Visitors may experience what it is like to pilot a tugboat, participate in a Coast Guard rescue on the Columbia River Bar, and live in Astoria during the height of salmon fishing.
