June 1, 1869: In the first game ever played by a professional baseball team (all paid players, no amateurs), the Cincinnati Red Stockings beat the Mansfield Independents, 48-14. In 1869, the Cincinnati Base Ball Club played the entire season with all of its players under contract. Thus began the era of professional baseball.
Although there was no league yet established, there were some 15 teams in the upper tier of clubs. The Red Stockings defeated all of these teams — many of them twice — and they also walloped a number of lesser clubs. Running up a record 130 straight wins.
February 2, 1876: The National League is formed in New York City with Cincinnati as a charter member. The other cities in the league included Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Hartford, Louisville, New York and Philadelphia.
