Golden Gate Bridge
By far the most famous of California, it was completed in 1937 after a difficult
four-year struggle against high winds, treacherous tides and dense fog. It is the
principle north-south route of the Pacific Coast Highway
(SR-1 / US-101), linking San Francisco to Marin County. The bridge toll is $3, collected
southbound only.
A popular scenic route is the pedestrian walkway along the bayside of the bridge
(open 5AM-9PM). Here you can get a "gulls-eye" view of to the decks of ocean-going vessels
and to San Francisco in the distance.
This engineering marvel is 8,981 feet long and the main span length is 4,200 feet making
it one of the longest single span suspension bridges ever built. Its two giant towers
stand 746 feet above the water, the highest in the world. The clearance of 220 feet allows
for the largest ocean-going liners and warships to pass underneath. A full-time paint crew
constantly maintains that distinctive orange color.

Fort Point National Historic Site
Massive bay fortress was built by the U.S. Army 1853-1861 and is nearly
identical in design to Fort Sumter, S.C. Although it never fought in
any battles it was defended by 102 cannon and 471 men and was the principal
center of defense on the West Coast until 1900.
Today it is a museum with videos showing the history of the fort and
the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge which looms massively overhead.
San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge
The terminal point of a major trans-continental highway (I-80), this bridge was completed
just six months before its counterpart at the Golden Gate. A much longer span, it touches
Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island as it connects San Francisco to the East Bay.
This bridge, including approaches, runs 8.4 miles long and includes a double deck tunnel
crossing of Yerba Buena Island.

Dumbarton Bridge
The southernmost crossing of the bay, the Dumbarton Bridge (SR-84) connects Palo Alto
to Fremont. In the process it crosses over the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National
Wildlife Refuge. (Toll)
San Mateo - Hayward Bridge
Another important south bay crossing is SR-82 which connects San Mateo to Hayward (Toll).
Its five steel spans constitutes the longest of the bay bridges and
one of the longest highway bridges in the country.
Richmond - San Rafael Bridge
The important north bay link is I-580, crossing between San Rafael and Richmond. (Toll)
