Tour Overview - Golden Gate Park

1017-acre urban park located on the west side of the City of San Francisco. A lush landscaped oasis that is home to a number of attractions, scenic trails and man-made lakes. Home to aquarium, planetarium, museums, tea garden, arboretum, beach chalet, and more.

John McLaren (1887-1943), a Scottish landscape gardener, worked hard to transform a barren wasteland into one of the most awesome urban parks in America. He added several artificial lakes and miles of roads, bridle paths and foot trails.

Located on Great Highway, this center features city murals, mosaics and wood carvings.

The Beach Chalet

This pair of restaurants is located where the Park meets the Pacific and feature spectacular ocean & garden views. The Beach Chalet serves a modern American menu with seaside accents for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. The new Park Chalet, located right behind the Beach Chalet, features indoor/outdoor dining by a roaring fire for lunch and dinner. Both restuarants feature live music select evenings and is the only event and wedding site in San Francisco with both an ocean and Golden Gate Park view, as well as indoor and outdoor reception accomodations.

Originally built in 1912 for the Golden Gate Park. In addition to 62 menagerie animals, the original carrousel hosted several decorative benches, a complete set of picture panels and an organ.

The oldest existing conservatory in the Western Hemisphere, is a spectacular living museum to rare and beautiful exotic plants including palms, orchis, bromeliads. Located at the eastern end of Golden Gate Park.

Since Sept 1882, this band has performed a free public sunday (1-3PM) concert series every season (Apr-Oct). Classical - Marches - Opera - Broadway Shows - Swing - Ethnic Programs. Band performs on the lawn near the fountain at the Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens near the park entrance at Ninth Avenue and Lincoln.

DeYoung Museum
Golden Gate Park - ReOpens Oct 15, 2005
On October 15, 2005, San Francisco's beloved de Young museum re-opens in a magnificent new building. Visit the de Young site in Golden Gate Park to see the construction progress.

  • Bison Paddock - About a dozen buffalo roam a small pasture near Spreckles Lake.

    Golden Gate Park Lakes

  • Spreckles Lake - Model boat club race regattas across the lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekend mornings. A dominos players meet on Saturdays by the lake shore.

    The mission of the San Francisco Botanical Garden is to create, sustain, and interpret a distinct, documented collection of mediterranean, mild temperate and tropical cloud-forest plants displayed in designed gardens and habitats, and to provide a place of exceptional beauty and natural sanctuary. There are 55 acres of sanctuary - landscaped gardens and open spaces - and over 7500 varieties of plants from around the world! Ask about visitors guide and plant sales.

    Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture - over 18000 books, it is the only major horticultural library in the Bay Area. It has a comprehensive reference collection of horticulture and related information including books, periodicals, nursery catalogs, pamphlets, slides, and videos.

    Located just 300 years from the Pacific Ocean, these two historic windmills were the largest of their kind when completed in 1905.

    The National AIDS Memorial Grove

    A living tribute to all lives touched by AIDS, this is a dedicated space in the national landscape where millions of Americans touched directly or indirectly by AIDS can gather to heal, hope, and remember. Approximately 7.5 acres in the eastern end of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park that like nature itself, the Grove changes with each season. Even the daily play of light and shadow makes each visit to the Grove a new experience.
