Exhibits about the Wells Fargo and Pony Express operations both of which had major offices here. Also contains exhibit on the California Supreme Court which convened here 1855-69.

Opened in 1849 and operated only three months before being closed by the devastating flood of 1850. Rebuilt in 1975.

Sacramento History Tour

Sacramento dates back to 1839 when Swiss immigrant, Capt. John Sutter, settled on 50,000 acre Mexican land grant at the confluence of the Sacramento and California Rivers. In the same year of the discovery of gold, 1848, the township of Sacramento was being laid out.
The great Gold Rush brought instant prosperity to the town as it quickly became a major mining supply camp. However, two major floods and two great fires devastated the town between 1849 and 1853, leveling much of the town. In spite of these setbacks, Sacramento was chosen in 1854 to become the new state capital.
The first railroad arrived in 1856 and the city became the western terminus of the Pony Express coming all the way from St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed.
Much of the early history is preserved in the historical sites and landmarks of Old Sacramento.

This museum has memorials and exhibits to honor native citizens who have served in times of war, peace and natural disaster. Special exhibits cover Spanish Explorers, Civil War, both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and major California earthquakes. Museum display artifacts include battle flags, weapons, uniforms, medals, and documents.

Tour State California Railroad Museum

Inside a three-story steel, brick and glass building is this museum. It houses 21 restored locomotives and rail cars. There are also more than 40 exhibits that portray this history of railroads in America.
Museum ticket is also good for a tour of adjacent Central Pacific Passenger Station at Front and J Sts. - This facility was the first California terminus for the transcontinental railroad.
