Tour Crescent City

Founded in 1853 as a gold mining camp, this town is named for its crescent shaped harbor and bay.
Points of Interest:
Point St. George - Prominent landmark protecting the city from northerly winds. Its offshore reef is the site of famous shipwrech of the sidewheeler Brother Jonathan - July 30, 1865. Many of the victims were buried at a town cemetery.

Lake Earl Wildlife Area - 5 miles north of town - 5,000 acres of wildlife habitat for boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and birdwatching.

Battery Point Lighthouse - working 1856 lighthouse with maritime museum located on Battery Point Island at the foot of A St.

Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park - contains 15 memorial redwood groves - located 7 mi south of Crescent City on US Hwy 101. Free Day Use..

Tour Smith River

The town of Smith River is actually on the banks of Rowdy Creek however its namesake is located nearby. Named for adventurer and trapper Jedediah Strong Smith who explored thru this region in 1828. The Smith River National Recreation Area is nearby.
Smith River is located 15 miles north of Crescent City and a mile south of Pelican Beach State Park.

Tour Trees of Mystery Park

Visit this grove of old-growth redwoods located about 18 miles south of Crescent City. There are both oddly formed trees and a collection of chainsaw carved redwood sculptures. There is also a small museum of Indian artifacts and crafts. 800-638-3389.
