El Vado Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, water-skiing, and winter cross-country skiing. The lake and surrounding area are a major wintering ground for bald eagles and other birds such as red-tail hawks, water ouzels, and ospreys. In the early 1900s, before the lake was constructed, the town of El Vado was a noisy, bustling railroad and lumber center and the largest town in the county.

Please note that Northern New Mexico is heavily visited in the summer (May-August) which makes getting reservations difficult. The best time to visit is March / April / September / October when there is beautiful weather and less competition for reservations. New Mexico area code is 505.
