    640 acre campus located about two miles east of downtown Albuquerque on Central Ave. Founded in 1889 it today hosts almost 35,000 students.

    Most campus buildings are of a modified Pueblo architectural design. Particularly noteworthy is Hodgin Hall. A fair number of gardens and a duck pond are scattered about campus.

    Museum and Libraries

      Campus Observatory

      Open: Fridays 7PM-11PM during winter (weather permitting);

      On clear Friday nights the high-powered telescopes are open to the public for some intense stargazing. Member of the UNM amateur astronomy club are usually present.

      Geology Museum

      Open: Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM; Donations;

      Part of the Earth Science Division - 22 exhibits explain the makeup of minerals, the geology of the earth and different geological periods.

      Jonson Gallery
      1909 Las Lomas NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131;
      Open: Tues-Fri 9AM-4PM / Tues 5PM-8PM;

      Unit of the University of New Mexico Art Museums that is dedicated primarily to the works of Raymond Jonson (1891-1982), a modernist painter and faculty member. Other exhibits regularly rotate through here.
      Raymond Jonson is widely accredited in bringing modern art into New Mexico. The gallery was opened in Jonson in 1950 as a monument to modern art.

      Masley Hall Art Gallery
      Art Education Building #68;

      Maxwell Museum of Anthropology
      Located in the Anthropology Building, this collections holds over 10 million items that focus on the archaeological, ethnological, archival, photo and skeletal history of the world and its cultures. Special emphasis given on the Southwest. For more info (505) 277-4405.

      Includes two special exhibits:

      • Ancestors - Over 4 million years of human evolution
      • Peoples of the Southwest - Interprets 11,000 years of cultural history.

      Meteorite Museum
      200 Yale Blvd, (Northrup Hall); (505) 277-4404;
      Open: Mon-Fri 9AM-12PM / 1-4PM; Donations;

      Part of the Earth Science Division - Exhibits meteorites collected from around the world. Other exhibits explain space and planetary science. Included is the world's second largest stone meteorite and the one-ton "Norton County" meteorite.

      Southwest Biology Museum
      Castetter Hall (Biology -#21) / By appointment only. Collection of vertebrates, anthropods, and plants of the American Southwest, Central and South America and throughout the world. In December 2000, the museum is moving to a new location. It is grouped in the following divisions:

      • Division of Amphibians and Reptiles - over 65,000 specimens (505) 277-5130;
      • Division of Anthropods - over 200,000 specimens, mostly from the American Southwest - (505) 277-4225;
      • Division of Biological Materials - 85,000 frozen specimens of vertebrate and invertebrates - (505) 277-6715;
      • Division of Birds - 25,000 specimens, mostly from the American Southwest - (505) 277-3315;
      • Division of Fishes - 45,000 specimens, mostly from the American Southwest - (505) 277-6005;
      • Division of Mammals - 95,000 specimens, mostly from the American Southwest - (505) 277-5340;
      • UNM Herbarium - 97,000 specimens of flowering plants, mostly of the American Southwest - (505) 277-3781;
      • USGS Biological Survey Collection - USGS collection of animals from the Rocky Mountain region, - (505) 346-2870;

      Sommers Gallery

      Tamarind Institute
      108 Cornell Dr, SE, Albuquerque, NM;
      Combination learning institute and gallery with special two-year program has attracted master artists from around the world. International acclaimed center for fine art lithography, whose main purpose is to train master printers and contributes to contemporary printmaking developments.

      University Art Museum
      Popejoy Hall / Center for the Arts; (505) 277-4001;
      Exhibit rated as the fifth largest collection of photographs in the country, including journalistic photography and avant-garde.


    Sports - U.N.M. Lobos

    The University of New Mexico participates in a wide variety of NCAA intercollegiate sports competition. Formerly part of the Western Athletic Conference, it has recently switched membership to the Mountain West Conference.
