Named for the Duke of Albuquerque - Old Town Plaza is the original village settlement dating back to 1706. Free guided walking tours of Old Town are held Tues-Sun at 11AM - mid-May to mid-Dec, departing from the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History. Over 150 shops and galleries surround Old Town Plaza and the adjacent Plaza Don Luis, offering arts, crafts and sample treats. The primary landmark here is the San Felipe de Neri Church. The original was built in 1706 but was badly damaged by floods. Its successor stands in its place today in the northwest corner of the plaze. This stately building and its surrounding gardens is well maintained and is one of the oldest continuously used building in the state of New Mexico. Adjacent is the Plaza Don Luis with more shops and galleries in 300-year old adobes lining romantic narrow brick streets. The center of this plaza is an enormous white gazebo, quite popular for weddings. At Christmas time, over 500,000 luminarias create a splendid spectacle. Weekly gunfight reenactments also occur here as well as two cannon, relics from the civil war when the town switched from Confederate to Union hands, stand on display.
