Sparks was founded in 1904 when the Southern Pacific Railroad moved their buildings to the east side of Reno. It was named for then governor of Nevada, John Sparks.

An outdoor mall, outdoor railroad exhibit and a number of casinos are located along Victorian Avenue and Victorian Square. Also home to 400-seat Victorian Amphitheater and Sparks Heritage Museum.
