Carson City was founded in 1858 and named for explorer Kit Carson. In 1864 it was designated the state capital of Nevada. The original silver-domed Capitol building is still in use. In the mid-1800's The city prospered as a commercial and social center for many nearby mining settlements.

Sierra Seminary
One of the first coeducational schools of the west, established in 1860 by Hannah Clapp, an outspoken advocate for women's rights.

Historic Pony Express Trail
Carson City sits astride the old Pony Express Trail - today's highway US-50 - dubbed the "loneliest highway in America".

Bowers Mansion Park

Restored mansion built by a Comstock Loke millionaire in 1864. Located 10 miles north of Carson City on US-395 overlooking the Washoe Lake. Contains original furnishings. Surrounding park has picnic facilities, playground and swimming pool.

Nevada State Railroad Museum

Train Rides: Fri-Sun 10-4; Train Pass: $2.50 / Ages (6-11) $1;
Over 60 pieces of locomotives and rolling stock most of which came from the Virginia and Truckee Railroad Line. Built in 1869 it carried ore from the Comstock Lode to Carson River for nearly 69 years. Later used by Hollywood for movie production. Train rides available Fri-Sun.

Located in the U.S. Mint Building which stamped Comstock Lode ore into US Silver Dollars in the late-1800's. Exhibits include:
