Ely was founded as a silver-mining camp in 1868. In 1905 the railroad reached to this town and the large Liberty Pit mining operation was started by Kennecott Copper Corp. This mine produced over $550 million of copper, gold and silver from 1905 to 1970.

The town sits astride the old Pony Express Trail - today's highway US-50.

Located in East Ely, facilities include restored depot, dispatcher's office, roundhouse, machine shop and great variety of railcars and locomotives. Various eras of railroad history are represented.
The Ghost Train of Old Ely makes a 1.5 hour round trip every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park
Six 30-foot-high stone "beehive" kiln ovens built in the 1870's. The ovens burned wood to produce charcoal to fuel area mine smelters. Go 5 miles southeast of Ely on US 6/50/93, then 11 miles south on Cave Valley Rd. (775) 728-4467.
